Last Week of Computer Applications

Dear Class:

We have had our challenges this semester, but my hope is that you can take something of value from this course and use it in the future. This past week, as we have explored career interests, your participation has been impressive. My sincere wish is for your future successes.

Week of May 11

OK, so now  you know to begin your review by logging in to www.icheck.glencoe.com/  We spent last Friday going over the Self Check exercises for Microsoft 2003 Wordthat will prepare you for the end of semester assignments. Next up is a review of Excel, then Access and PowerPoint. Those of  you who are exempting the exam please take note. This review will apply to several assessments before this semester comes to a close.

We have the Integrated Applications beginning next week as the presentations begin. I have posted your times on the board. Take note of it and do not try to delay having your oral and technical presentation on career choice ready to go.

Week of May 4

Most of you are enjoying the PowerPoint session of the course as shown by the good work turned in.

Special note: Are you taking some time to look at the Self Checks on www.icheck.glencoe.com? This means that you begin with Word, then Excel, then Access and finally PowerPoint. I will cover integration of applications in two weeks. Do not leave this opportunity for the last days before the final. I am including ,in this  blog, a Unit 4 Study Guide that shows only questions, but not the answers. On Wednesday, be prepared to see how I will present this grading challenge to the class.

Week of April 27

Now is not the time to sit back and relax. This last month of school can determine your grade, but, most importantly, what you can take with you from this course to help you with your education and career.

Let's start now with the review. Go to www.icheck.glencoe.com  and review the Self Checks for Microsoft Office 2003 Unit 1. Remember I told you that we would go there again. I will be checking on your self checks during class.

Week of April 20

This is the last week concentrating on ACCESS. However, just know that, as is the case with other applications, you will see databases again. Prepare for the Unit 3 test Lessons 1-4. I will review each lesson so be prepared to take notes.

Often I hear that if I do my work, I do not have to behave. Tell employers that!! You are to strive for satisfactory conduct as a part of your "job" as a student. Give respect and you will earn respect.

The semester is not over yet, put forth your best effort.

Computer Applications-What it is and what it is not

 Computer Applications is a fundamental tech elective that serves as a foundation for using the Microsoft 2003 Office package. It does not include web page design, programming or architectural design. However, by taking this pre-requisite course, you will be better prepared to advance on to other computer based or technology courses.

Speaking of technology, we have been easing into Access. This database application will prove to be a versatile learning experience. Remember you are all in a database of some sort!

Week of March 9

Hope you all are seeing how spreadsheets are a valuable tool. Note that Excel is a Microsoft (software) name, but spreadsheets are the application.

Handouts from last week are due Monday for review and grading. Make sure you have these up to date.

Week of March 2

The start  of our Excel practice is encouraging. Remember the foundation criteria for setting up your spreadsheets:

Save as file name - always - do not take the chance of loosing your work!

Go to Page Setup and enter the information on each tab:

        Landscape

        Custom Header

        Vertically and horizontally center

        Gridlines - if required

        Print only page 1 to 1

        Format cells accordingly

Here is the download on Lesson 2, but the production handouts also tell me what you have learned. Look for a test on Wednesday!  That  is early release and dress for success and our Who's Who Assembly.

Do not forget the essay about how spreadsheets are used in business. Do not do a cut and paste without a works cited. No plagiarism will be tolerated. The essay may be finished during class time on Monday.
