10th Grade Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Practice.  Unit 1 Vocab intro words 16-20.  Quiz Friday.  Block 1 worked in groups to identify all the elements of symbolism found in E. A. Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and discussed the story as an allegoy.  Students then took a quiz.  The next story in the unit was introduced by reading and discussing the article "Going to Extremes" from Reality Central.  Block 4 recalled the elements of "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" in a class discussion, then worked in groups on an Indirect Characterization activity.  Students shared their ideas with the whole class.  Closure included a quick write relating the Essential Question to the story's character and theme.    The Short Story Unit will end with a unit test on Friday.  Please have your novel, The Hunger Games, in class with you on Friday and every day until the end of the Novel Unit.

9th Grade Block 3:  EOCT Review B.  Unit 1 Vocab intro words 16-20.  Quiz Friday.  Students read the article "Competing to Win" from Reality Central and discussed the benefits and drawbacks of competitive sports.  They con't reading "The Most Dangerous Game" from the textbook and answered discussion guide questions as they read sharing their responses at the end of the reading.  Groups of 4 worked on an Indirect Characterization Activity and shared their ideas with the whole class discussing how the main character is dynamic.  Closure included a quick write relating character with the Essential Question.   The Short Story Unit will end with a unit test on Friday.  Please have your copy of Night with you on Friday and every day until the end of the Novel Unit.

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Practice.  Unit 1 Vocabulary words 11-15 - Workbook p. 22 & 23 with ppt.   Block 1 finished reading "The Masque of the Red Death" and literary discussion.  Quiz tomorrow.  Block 4 reviewed the symbolism of the story and took the quiz.  Class read the article "Going to Extrmemes" from Reality Central and discussed taking risks for the fun of it and whether some challenges are just too dangerous to be worthwhile.  Students read "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" textbook p. 117.  Literary discussion tomorrow.

9th Block 3:  EOCT Practice.  Unit 1 Vocabulary words 11-15 - workbook p. 22 & 23 with ppt.  Students discussed "the Most Dangerous Game" begun on Friday (reading guide handout) and continued reading textbook p. 219.

Afternoon Basketball Homecoming Pep Assembly Today.  All class periods are shortened.

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Practice.  Unit 1 Vocabulary Test words 1-10.  1st Block read E. A. Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and began discussing literary elements.  Discussion will continue on Monday.  Block 4 concluded their discussion on symbolism in preparation for next week's quiz.

9th Block 3:  EOCT Practice.  Unit 1 Vocabulary Test words 1-10.  The class discussed hunting as a sport in preparation of the next short story and began reading "The Most Dangerous Game."  Reading and discussion will continue on Monday.

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Warm Up.  Students reviewed Unit 1 Vocabulary words 1-10 completing Workbook pg. 26 Choosing the Right Word #1, 5, 8, 13, 18, & 20.  Turning to a Study Buddy they quizzed each other to prepare for tomorrow's test.  Block 1 students worked in groups analyzing the elements of "There Will Come Soft Rains" and then came together as a whole class to discuss their ideas.  Block 4 students read E.A. Poe's "Masque of the Red Death" and discussed the elements of the story, emphasizing symbolism and allegory.

9th Block 3:  EOCT Warm Up.  Students reviewed Unit 1 Vocabulary words 1-10 completing Workbook pg. 26 Choosing the Right Word #3, 4, 9, 14, 16, & 17.  Turning to a Study Buddy they quizzed each other to prepare for tomorrow's test.  Students read an article "Media Madness" and discussed media intrusion, then read "Blues Ain't No Mockingbird" p. 351 in their textbook.  Working in small groups and responding to questions students analyzed elements of the story then came together as a whole group and shared their ideas.

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Warm Up.  Unit 1 Vocab Practice - Students completed Workbook pg. 24 & 25 Completing the Sentence #1, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18 & 19;  Synonyms & Antonyms # 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 17 & 19.  Quiz on Friday.   The class read textbook pg 263-292 "There Will Come Soft Rains" and analyzed the literary elements in small groups and then shared ideas in whole group instruction.

9th Block 3:  Students had an EOCT Review and turned in.  Unit 1 Vocab Practice - Students completed Workbook pg. 24 & 25 Completing the Sentence #2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, & 20;  Synonyms & Antonyms #1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 11, 14, 15, 17, & 20.  Quiz on Friday.  Students then worked in small groups using graphpic organizers to analyze the elements of "The Gift of the Magi" that was read yesterday.  Groups came together and shared ideas in a whole class discussion.

All Classes:  Summer Reading Assessments were turned in. 

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Warm Up.  Con't. Unit 1 Vocabulary ppt words 6-10;  quiz on words 1-10 on Friday.  See yesterday's blog to download ppt. to use for review.  Students wrote short answer essays for "A Visit to Grandmother" and began the next story selection "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury p. 283.

9th Block 3:  EOCT Practice-"Elements of Fiction"    Con't Unit 1 Vocabulary ppt words 6-10;  quiz on words 1-10 on Friday.  See yesterday's blog to download ppt. to use for review.  Students read and discussed an informational article from Reality Central and responded to a guided discussion.  The class read "The Gift of the Magi" textbook pg. 259.

Vocabulary study will begin with Unit 1 on Monday, January 23.  Students must bring their workbooks to class every day.  Books can still be purchased for $10.00.

Summer Reading Assessments are due on Tuesday, January 24.  Download Summer Reading 2011-2012  Bring any work completed on a flash drive to be used in the Writing Lab on Monday.  Email finished glogs to Janice.LeRose@gmail.com 

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Warm Up.  Discussed annotation: How to Annotate and What to Annotate (handout.)  Discussed "A Visit to Grandmother's" ppt   and read the story p. 243-249 annotating text and discussing story elements.  Worked in groups using indirect characterization graphic organizer recording textual evidence. 

9th Block 3:  EOCT Practice - Setting, Mood, and Tone.  Students continued working in small groups with graphic organizers identifying literary elements of "The Necklace."  Student answers along with a list of the story's themes were shared with the whole class.  Writing - Students chose one of the character's traits and explained 2 incidences from the story where the trait was demonstrated along with interpretation.

All classes:  10th Grade - SAT Practice.  9th Grade - EOCT Practice:  Plots, Characters, and Conflicts.  10th Blocks 1 & 4 students worked in groups on an indirect characterization acitivity for "Civil Peace" and 9th Block 3 for "The Necklace."  Students shared their groupwork in whole-class discussion.

10th Blocks 1 & 4:  SAT Warm Up.  Conducted a literary discussion of "Civil Peace" following ppt. slides and made connections to the Essential Question.  Related character's personal conflicts to the EQ.   Writing assignment - What conclusions can be drawn about the character's atitude toward good and bad events?

9th Block 3:  EOCT Practice - Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots.  Read "The Necklace" and discussed literary elements.  Students used provided graphic organizers to record story elements and for coding text.
