Art History - Chpt. 14 - ISM's SURREALISM
CLASS ASSIGNMENT- LINOLEUM PRINTING
Students will find images and discuss what makes an image surreal. Students will look through Nat-Geo magazines for photographs to find subjects to use for this assignment. The subject should be a mixture of 2 or 3 different animals, insects, machines, etc. An environment must foster the surreal feeling (eg. someone’s eye, ice on fire, etc…). Students must create four idea sketches to discuss. Students will watch a demonstration on how to: transfer their chosen drawing onto a linoleum block, outline and color in the positive space, and how to use the carving tools correctly. Students will transfer their design and outline/color in with sharpie marker/ start carving outlines. THEN – IT'S TIME TO PRINT! After a printing, signing and numbering demonstration students will print their linoleum, block starting with 5 black. Students need to turn in a series of 10 perfect prints (5 black and white & 5 colored) signed and numbered. (If there is one finger print or smudge the print will NOT be accepted).
